James Baldwin knew. I’m just glad he understood what is at stakes in any election, more so, how one moves as a black American citizen in a racist country. We hold multiple realities at once, which is a gift not a curse. We have to find a way to, as he says, keep turning the tide and buying us time.

It’s quite clear we need to be reading more — ESPECIALLY THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

My grandfather’s friend, Charles Earle, told me he carries a copy of the Constitution everywhere he goes. This week, I’ve been rereading it, slowly. Alongside some others. When Toni Morrison said this is the time the writer goes to work, she also meant reading. There’s no greater power.

What a tragedy to trade American democracy willingly knowing the history of the sheer human damage Hitler and Nazi Germany did on the world.

A history ignored is a history repeated.
