Maybe “Milibanded” - destroyed by powerful vested media interests who perceive a threat

This is exactly what has happened in Bristol. And Labour, now in opposition to the Green Council, are still pandering to Reform voters

….but we can’t argue that there’s a big financial win to buying a heat pump, solar, battery, hob and everything else for all but those households with a very large bank balance.

A very large number of people with a gas boiler will also have a gas hob and maybe oven. We seem to have moved away from talking about this as a purely investment decision about standalone heat pumps. Which is fine as burning fewer fossil fuels is a good thing…

I imagine very few in which case the cost of a new cooker hob needs to be added to the equation
January 30, 2026 at 8:55 PM
Lucky you. Sounds a great setup. But involves spending more thousands of pounds to realise £130 of benefits. I do like heat pumps but we can’t pretend they aren’t a difficult sell, with the “spark gap” being the biggest obstacle.

I don’t understand- svr? How do you transfer your cooking costs to off peak??
January 30, 2026 at 5:53 PM
If you’re disconnecting your gas hob and replacing with induction not only are you buying a new hob you’re paying more every time you cook

It’s important to avoid countering one set of heroic assumptions with another. The £130 saving by disconnecting from gas doesn’t apply to anyone with a gas hob for instance.

As for “overpopulation”, the global average for live births per woman has nearly dropped to the replacement rate. What else do you propose to do about it?

Sure, however that’s a data point not a statistic

Starmer scrabbling in the dirt to pick up Trump’s papers. Venezuelan leader handing him a medal.
The president gets his kicks from humiliating people and feeling he is entitled to get whatever he wants. Once he has something, his interest in his new possession quickly fades

Meanwhile US starts gradually shipping in forces and contractors allowing Trump to claim he now owns Greenland. (3/3)

France’s attempt to push back thwarted by Trumpist Italy and Hungary, aided by Starmer who insists for ever that while he “fundamentally disagrees” with seizing Greenland, “more dialogue” is the answer to Trump’s “security concerns”. (2/3)

Surely we’re done to death with articles explaining “the benefits of trams”. Examination of why the UK is an extremely difficult place to build them would be more insightful

This explains why people in favour of renewables are often embarrassed to express their opinions whilst climate change deniers feel comfortable loudly opining with minimal challenge

One thing that history shows is that no matter how terrible the US President is, there’s an even worse one preparing to take over
