This is a nonsense position. Bordering on offensive.

Genuinely curious where you found data about motivation to home school. Where I am this info is not collected. And if anything allows the dept of education off the hook for making needed investment in the school system.

I can't speak to the agenda in place in the US, but I don't see it happening here. Respectfully, the article you shared refers to Disney home schoolers. This is not about compassion for families placed in difficult situations. Nor is it criticising govt underfunding.

The article appears to misrepresent what HS is for a large number of families. Not sure what else to expect from WSJ which was part of the "covid is mild, get back to the office" brigade.

The problems are systemic, I agree. I seek only to gently push back against the social prejudice against home schooling as evidenced in other comments here. We're in Victoria. The govt here makes no effort to remove barriers to HS. Offers no incentives. We want to minimise harm to our child.

All well and good if your child sits comfortably in the middle of the bell curve. But this is quite an ableist position.

Also I read an assumption about the motivation for a family to choose home schooling. In my experience at least, it isn't the first preference but may be the only real option for the child.

Ok. I think I read the excerpt as an attempt to discredit home schooling as a valid form of educating a child. We may be in different contexts (I'm in Australia) but schools, despite their best efforts, are not adequately funded to support children with different needs.

In which way is the rise of home schooling deeply troubling?

Hope it will still be available in 2037 when my son will be eligible to get one.
