Buybacks are straight-up stock manipulation and used to be illegal until 1982, for very good reasons.
But the people who benefit from this shady practice had spent enough lobbying the SEC and the legislature to get it repealed.

I study history (badly) and I can see the macho allure of concentrating and the battles, tactics, weaponry and "heroics".

However, it all has to be put into context, the politics understood and as unvarnished as it's possible to get.

People who glorify war don't really understand it.

Stock buy-backs were illegal and classed as "Stock Price manipulation" until 1982.

The single purpose is to inflate the stock price without requiring capital investment, market or revenue growth or indeed, actual productivity metrics.

Personally, I think it should be taxed to disincentivise it.

Here's the thing, they can leave, but you know what they can't take? Land, Property, football teams, rents and mortgages and other ways they get passive income or ways they accumulate wealth at the cost to the British public.

Tax the wealth, not the income.

Indeed so, though I do lament the lack of decorum with the more modern "Does this really have to be a meeting? You could have just sent an e-mail."

"Geoff.... Geoff you're still on mute, mate. No, that's the camera button, mute, the little microphone."
To use a more formal greeting.
