The nice thing about the midnight show is that its explicit in its purpose. Tends to draw the huge fans since the time is non traditional and that lends itself to an energy that can be hard to match at a matinee. Does it have to be at Midnight? no but i like an opt in system with these things.

They could do midnight screenings for the participation since there is precedent with Rocky Horror and The Room. The midnight showing of Snakes on Plane was also very audience participatory. It might make both atmospheres better.
