Great song from a great (mostly overlooked?) band…

Didn't take for me when I first picked it up either. Now I feel like I should give it a second try. Still sitting all dusty up on the shelf... (I also agree with you wholeheartedly about AI, if I may blur posts...)

I was just about to ask which it was you were speaking of so glowingly? If I had a little extra time I would have tried to guess from your description...

She wasn't the villain then, either. Not that income inequality isn't a destructive force we need to reckon with. But let's not go reading into things too much...

One of the great songs. Then again, so is every other song on those 2 1/2 LPs....

Great song. Elephants and Flowers also a standout for me...

I read some excerpts from this book in the New Yorker and what struck me most was how annoying her therapist was... also, the Griffin Dunne memoir is a fantastic read, with a lot of Didion-adjacent stuff

I fully respect your deep Prince fandom. But honestly, I can't get behind the 90s output to the degree you are able to. Every time I try to put on Emancipation, I find myself taking it off soon after... That being said, are you hip to the NPG import album Exodus? Incredible...

I also LOVE the acoustic CD 4!! Which I think somehow isn't available on recent iterations of the boxed set?? My only beef, as an studio nerd, is that as opposed to the gorgeous new acoustic version of Free, he used the pickup/DI for all the acoustic tracks on Crystal Ball. Ah well, nitpicking...

Crystal Ball itself being one of the weirdest, coolest, funkiest, best (?) Prince tunes - ever! (imho...). Or, is it really a Camille tune??

Love Come, although some of the songs leave me flat on this record. Also, production a little too high tech. But Let It Go is one of the great Prince songs...

Royalty! Getting fitted around the time of the MSG wedding?

Great show, what a voice, what slide player! A welcome balm during these crazy times...

What a cool time-capsule, songwise, and videowise. An oh so brief period of time when you could wander into the Bag o' Nails and see Jimi Hendrix? Sigh...

I maintain that this era of Tull - the "bonus" tracks from the UK version of Benefit, along with the studio tracks on Living in the Past, is the pinnacle - Up the 'Pool, Life's a Long Song, Witch's Promise, Trying to Be, Wondering Aloud. All so good...

Pedro Bell, I believe? How refreshing to see Funkadelic artwork in this current era of mass-produced egocentric social media-focused pablum... simpler times. Yet so much more depth and creativity...

That's cool, but I was going to ask you not to tell me the changes! Spoiler alert!?! But I just glanced at them, not to worry. Sometimes with voicings like that I like leaving it a mystery (to me anyway...)

I didn't register initially that today is The Day. Can't believe it's been 9 years. Crazy. Impossible to quantify what an effect he had on my life. And it never fails to floor me how prophetic that song is...

Always wanted to sit down and figure that one out! Although I'd probably try it on guitar... has one of the great and most unexpected chord changes of all time in the chorus on "Sometimes I *wish*"... That chord on "wish"?? Pure genius...

One of THE great albums of the last few decades...

Always hated Spotify. Initially for sound quality (shitty) and payments to musicians (peanuts). And now I know it's not just me who is mystified by how hard it is to find ALBUMS on Spotify! Tidal is way better. The sound quality is now similar between the two, but Tidal respects the album.

If I had time I'd try to grab as much as I could from the 1982 section also...

Parade blew my mind top to bottom (certain substances helped) although the French-inflected songs took a little longer. I made a mix tape replacing the album tracks with the 12" versions and that was KILLER!
April 9, 2025 at 1:25 PM
There's a case to be made that 1986 was "peak Prince" (Parade, Crystal Ball, starting work on Sign o the Times...) I'm of a certain age and I remember exactly when I first listened to every album.
