I was a game designer working closely with product managers at previously-relevant companies for almost a decade. It really is as dumb as just copying whatever is working (or someone believes is working) in another game.

Developers usually get paid per ad impression, more if the player clicks on the ad. Maybe 5-10 years ago Gardenscape saw huge click-through-rate on the kinds of ads you describe and because modern gaming is primarily focused on making money… the industry copied what had “proven” to make money.

Worked 20 years in games and the MBA business douches have completely corrupted what was once an artistic and/or exploratory medium. It’s always been a business, but now it’s basically just copy game features wholesale in order to “minimize risk” and “maximize KPIs”.
