Thanks for sharing! I’ve been interested in people’s responses to this for a little while now—some refuse to cite him, some do cite and say something, others just cite (and I’m sure some don’t know). I’ve noticed a pretty strong generational shift from the latter (older) to the former.

Well I guess it depends on how your department/ university writes your tenure manual? Actually this is something I’ve thought about recently, though prob not as relevant with academia crumbling around us—that when given the chance we should critically rewrite tenure qualifications. My dept. did it!

I’m about to publish in a language that I’m NOT super strong in (Spanish—but my co-authors are Spanish/ English bilingual). For us the reason it is worthwhile is so our work about Costa Rica can be read by Costa Ricans!

I’m all for virtual/ hybrid options but as a former treasurer of the society for medical anthropology I also know that doing a real hybrid conference is very expensive and the AAA has been struggling a bit financially 😬

I guess it depends on how you define “Atlanta.” I think Decatur is a part of Atlanta, especially if you are discussing “living in Atlanta.” And I think a lot of people who live in the in-town (ITP) neighborhoods probably feel similar to me.

amazing music and culture and the cost of living is manageable on a public uni salary. My kids go to top-ranked public schools, surrounded by educated progressive friends with a deep sense of community. Every time I’ve thought about moving to a new job I realize my quality of life will not improve 🤷🏻‍♂️

Dang that’s just flat out wrong. I live in a walkable city (Decatur) just 6 miles from downtown Atlanta. I walk to the train and take it to work at my university everyday; my entire commute takes about 30 minutes, which I spend reading
