ok I worked for a social platform that grew juuuuust enough to get sold before dying (and then got mashed up into TikTok along with other acquired apps) so I think I have some expertise relevant to the “why is Bluesky losing active users” conversation

A two page 1988 ad from the United Kingdom for F.I.S.T., phone-based RPG adventures presented by Steve Jackson

F.I.S.T. stood for Fantasy Interactive Scenarios by Telephone where players call in, create a character (which was saved), and dial-battle through a narrated dungeon crawling experience!
"The Number you have dialed is not of this earth. You have opened the gateway to an alternate reality. You are being connected to another world in another time. Where YOU are another person. Welcome to F.I.S.T." Get ready for "A new dimension in fantasy gaming!" Two adventures would ultimately become part of the F.I.S.T. service -- the first, advertised here, was called Castle Mammon. The second, Rings of Allion, would come later with F.I.S.T. 2. Players would mail in for a free Adventurer's Pack which contained a starter kit of information on the rules for the adventure (Castle Mammon) along with a membership form and some background tips. Everything was driven by your phone using a menu of choices with which you could learn about the game from others connecting to the service like a group chat, an 'academy' to practice the combat system with, a store to equip your adventurer with gear if they survive the adventure, a monthly competition, and more. Players dial in their combat moves, increasing their ability and becoming stronger, as the service describes the adventure to them like a Dungeon Master. In addition to the recorded narration and dial-in interaction, the game also featured sound effects to enhance the adventuring experience!
