He also directed the Devilman OVA which had a few Ghibli talent on it.

Also shout out to Oh! productions too who were also very supportive for Ghibli's creation. Tsutomu Iida who worked at that studio was the assistant director on Laputa. He would sometimes come to the studio dressed in Tokusatsu costume at the weekend.

Toru Hara left around the time Studio Ghibli moved from rented accommodation to it's own original building in the early 90s

Even if Topcraft's involvement in the birth of Ghibli can be overstated, Hara's is not. Isao Takahata said in his Laputa Roman Album interview that without Hara, none of this would be possible; he made those early years at the studio when every movie could be their last.

Including one key animator Katsuyuki Kobayashi, who did some cool work on The Last Unicorn. (Although they didn't stay at Studio Ghibli after Laputa)

I could only confirm that about 5 staff members including Toru Hara himself who had worked with Topcraft prior to Nausicaa who also worked on Laputa.

The second highest came from Nippon Animation, with whom both creators also had a history.

When we look at their previous credits and affiliations, half of those staff were from Studio Telecom, where both Miyazakis and Takahata had previously worked.
February 28, 2025 at 7:23 PM
If any of them returned, it was probably due to Hara's involvement as he became the head of Studio Ghibli.
If we look at the staff shared between Nausicaa and Laputa, it might look like Studio Ghibli was full of Topcraft members, there's about 30 staff shared between them however...

Hara implies that most of the staff were new.
In the book, "Another Barusu", production manager Hirokatsu Kihara said that he asked Hara to contact him if he ever got another chance to work with Miyazaki. Which Hara did a few months later.

Topcraft went bankrupt the following year after the release of Nausicaa.
This was around the same time that the founder of Topcraft, Toru Hara was asked by Isao Takahata to start a new studio.

There's a really good chapter on this in the Industrial History of Studio Ghibli that breaks down a lot of this.
February 28, 2025 at 7:23 PM
Nausicaa made the studio a fair bit of money, but they were chosen out of necessity since they worked outside of the anime industry and the anime industry was all booked up.
February 28, 2025 at 7:23 PM
Studio TopCraft is best known for working with Rankin & Bass on films like The Hobbit, but they also ended up being the production house for Nausicaa

I see a myth go around about how animation studio Topcraft became Studio Ghibli, but it's not true.
Lets talk about it🧵
