...but only because they want to keep the same old, broken status quo. It worked nicely for them. Too many could act with impunity. Today's announcement won't change this overnight but it's a bold step in the right direction. Well done @lucyrigby.bsky.social

Many of them didn't even understand the rules they were supposed to enforce. Too many went soft on those breaking the rules for fear of loss of income. Intelligence sharing was poor. Any 'lsector specific 'expertise' inconsequential given the above. Lawyers, accountants etc will keep banging on...

There are also strong vested interests at play. You can already see lawyers and accountants claiming this will lead to more red tape (it won't). In fact its more efficient, taking out 20+ ineffective & self-interested regulators in one swoop. If you want to see how good they were read OPBAS reports.

I'm not going to pretend today's announcement is a silver bullet. You can't solve a problem like this with a press release overnight. But credit to the gov for finally doing something bolder than the same older inertia. Devil is in the detail and transition/implementation is key.

...different outcome is a, allegedly, a sign of mad. And UK policy on enablers was mad. Billions and billions laundered, with UK company service providers, accountants and lawyers in the supply change. Hardly anyone held to account. Occasionally the odd slap on the wrist. Over. And. Over. And. Over.

When we started looking at this issue over a decade ago we found a complete mess. 25 different regulators responsible for enforcing 'know your customer' rules. Many were highly conflicted, acting as both supervisors and lobbyists for their industry. Self-regulation was failing. And badly.
