Even informal institutions, “third places”, have declined massively. I blame a lot on social media and a cultural attitude to always be “productive”. So much of feeling fulfilled is being in the moment with your own thoughts and values, or being present with others in a non-judgmental setting.

I think some academics see it as a sign of virtue to police any criticism that feels remotely subjective. But people are not machines with infinite patience, time, and brainpower to suffer through bad-faith thought experiments; thinking otherwise is sociopathic.
