Assumptions, but then again, isn't that what a teaser's supposed to do? Give you a feel for what the movie's supposed to be?
And right now, all I see is Dreamworks taking the easy route with pop culture, using it only to seem "hip", rather than having something to say. Much like Shrek the Third.

You're missing the problem.
In the first 4 Shrek movies, the pop culture was used to build upon its identity as the antithesis of Disney, but they weren't using whatever they saw. There was thought put into those references, not just in what to use, but how to use them.

To be fair, Shrek Forever After kept the same design, and that was 2010.

And the new Dreamworks intro kept it.
So I don't blame people for thinking this is an unnecessary decision.
