After I posted this image yesterday, Susan, I came across this wonderful passage in Niall Williams Four Letters of Love. See ALT. #BlueBrewBooks
On Saturday, as I was reading Niall Williams’ “Four Letters of Love,” this passage stopped me: “Leaving Isabel by the Long Walk, looking out across the stilled waters of the Claddagh, where a blue boat lay on the mirror of its own hull, and made her imagine a sea so calm she might have walked home across the water.” The description of the boat struck me for I had just posted that morning this photo of a fishing boat laying at its mooring in the Bay of Naples, but lacked Williams’ descriptive writing skills to say it “lay on the mirror of its own hull.” I might have used the verb “mirrored” as in “its hull was mirrored in the still water,” but to use the noun and write that “it lay on the mirror of its own hull” is the difference between good writing and great writing.

In the spring of 2007, I had the good fortune to spend three weeks studying photography in Italy through a local college. We were based in a school in the old Italian resort town of Sorrento on the Bay of Naples. Our classroom was two or three stories up, and this was a stunning view that greeted me that first day. Just beyond the church is the bluff overlooking the bay and Mount Vesuvius.
