Cosmopterix scribaiella mines found on Common Reed at RSPB Fowlmere on Saturday - a rare moth in Cambs previously only recorded in 3 10km squares in the north east of the county around the Wicken Fen area

Well after all that, 6/3 ain't bad... 3 Green-brindled Crescent, 2 Novmber agg. (couldn't be bothered examining them - done 10 so far - all November Moth this year at the moment), 1 Brick

No, I haven't checked the mine behind the E. pertinax - the host is Tube Clematis (Clematis heracleifolia)... I think I did a couple of year back... I think they were Agromyzidae...?

Finally crawled out of bed mid-morning (it's lurgy-season it would seem) - spotted a moth flying in between the rain (it's also looking a bit like monsoon season out there) - Silver Y - only my 6th this year... Also a female Eristalis pertinax on the next leaf over....

My late Grandfather-in-law (who I never met unfortunately) apparently used to comment that the most useful moth identification book would be one showing them from underneath, as that's all you ever saw of them on your windows. Here's a start - Gold Triangle (62.076 Hypsopygia costalis)

And not been back to Germany since...

I've had the Slender Burnished Brass (Thysanoplusia orichalcea, "ORI") out for a few weeks now (along with the NI Moth lure) - this morning was the first Plusia to give either more than a passing sniff... 6th Dewick's Plusia of the year. One of ths smartest Plusias to my eye #teammoth #mothmatters

Wow - I did a double take at the name and photograph. In the UK, Light Emerald (Campaea margaritaria) is on the wing right now - here's one from this morning

I was happy enough to see this one return after a complete absence last year...
May 30, 2025 at 6:49 PM
Argyresthia cupressella perched on a leaf on the Crab Apple tree next to my office door late morning. Thought it was NFG - nope! recorded one on 2nd June last year - consistent I guess... (Unlike Obsidentify which came up for 3 different Argyresthia sp. + Green-veined white from 4 photos!)

Grapholita lobarzewskii to the FOR lure late yesterday afternoon
May 27, 2025 at 8:54 PM
Celypha lacunana was NFY in the trap this morning as was this female Common Swift. Also the reds were out and about - Cinnabar and Flame Carpet
May 19, 2025 at 5:52 AM
In addition to the moths, there was also a male Broad Centurion (Chloromyia formosa) and a female Sphaerophoria sp. hoverfly - both a bit bigger than the 3.5 - 4 mm of B. nigricomela! All photos straight from the Olympus TG-6 with no editing - great little camera!

Spent a bit of time staring at things in the "meadow" were I haven't mowed the lawn much in the last 2-3 years. Plenty of Ox-eye daisy in there, and this evening found my first confirmed Bucculatrix nigricomela perched on the end of a leaf of one. Also 4 Cochylimorpha straminea. 1/2...

Another hot sunny day with a gentle breeze saw AND, VES, CUL and FOR clearwing lures deployed again. Slightly surprisingly, late morning I found my first Red-belted Clearwing of the year in the AND pot - a whopping 34 days earlier than my previous earliest...

And amongs the hundreds of flying ants, also this Cinnabar moth, which posed obligingly, and Cochylichroa atricapitana
May 12, 2025 at 7:22 PM
Last night added 3 carpet species to the year list here in VC29 - Common Marbled, Red Twin-spot (underside of wings checked) and Green....
May 12, 2025 at 7:20 PM
Very moody skies at dawn this boring (taken at about 4.40am) - moths far outnumbered by flying ants which were everywhere around and in the trap - surprised Alfred Hitchcock didn't think of it as a sequel to birds....
May 12, 2025 at 6:27 PM
5/5 this morning in the trap - 2 NFY - Common White Wave and my second ever Musotima nitidalis (The first sometime last yearflew from the eggbox, landed long enough for me to see what it was on a nearby plant and then flew again before net, pot or camera could get to it!)
