They are protected now, but not because of collectors. Cubans started collecting them in huge quantities for use as craft material. Barrels-full were being smuggled into the US. They have been very popular with collectors for decades!

Yes, very venomous but rarely fatal. Other species of cones are much more dangerous.

The problem isn't just the tariff, but the insane brokerage fees that companies like UPS, DHL (the worst!) charge. The problem with many postal services not delivering to the US is that it forces people to use a courrier rather than mail.
