Is this scientists being political? Of course: it has clear political implications. Is it right? To express serious concerns about dangers to public health? No question. So it's OK for scientists to be political? Here that's simply what being a scientist demands.

There are inherent limits on self reports however, and means. More important is to consider rates of 'poor' health and what the mean. Likely, a strong social gradient. Also, we are all getting older!
Earlier this week we published analysis of new ONS data showing that there had been no change in self-reported health between 2011 and 2021.

This represents a lost decade. It emphasises the need to put prevention at the heart of the Govt's plans to build health.
