My wife Jill and I took time out to sign the book of condolence this morning in the Town Hall in Chesterfield, in memory of the victims of genocide and ethnic cleansing across the world and in particular to those who were the victims of the Holocaust in WW11 on this very important day.

My wife Jill and I were absolutely delighted to lay a wreath for the Chesterfield Association of Old Contemptible’s at the Menin Gate in Ypres this evening. Always a moving service of remembrance and our deepest thanks go to the Last Post Association for making this happen.

Paid our respects this morning to this brave fellow Captain Ackroyd. The attached sheet was in the Cemetery information box. Recommend on 23 separate occasions for the VC. Outstanding.

A cultural diversion this morning taking in the magnificent Palais Beaux Des Arts Gallery in Lille. Pictured below is a copy of a bronze statue of four resistance fighters just before being executed by the Germans at the gates of Lille in 1915.

Took a slight detour on our way to Lille this afternoon to pay our respects to the 41 brave souls in Meharicourt Communal Cemetery, including this brave chap Pilot officer Andrew Mynarski. The only WW11 recipient of the VC to be buried on the former Somme battlefields.

Absolutely haunting yet moving statue of Canada bereft, Walter Alwards masterpiece looking over the former coalfields at Vimy ridge where 60,000 Canadian troops perished during WW1.
