The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers is mostly set on a spaceship that builds portals between planets.
In order to have a portal between A and B, you first need someone to travel to A and B with the portal equipment.

It was a devastingly sad ending, but also not a surprise. It made sense within the context of the book. For me, the courage to have that ending was one of the best aspects of the book.
Bel Canto, the next book I read, also has a similarly themed ending. You might like it.
