I am not quite a gentleman but you would hardly notice it but it cant be helped anyhow. I'm the operator […]

Some loud bangs outside last night. Decided they were not firearms and there was no other noise so left alone.

Talked to neighbour just now. It was fireworks several houses over. Someone called the cops. Cops turned out in force.... to another house close by where a Mongrel Mob member lives […]

Do you have a good home plum wine recipe?

If yes, please share. Because I have nearly 10kg of ripe plums and access to more, and the right equipment for home fermentation. Difficulty: this lot'll spoil in a day or two...

Sooner or later we are going to think less of QEII when the Andrew shitbaggery has really sunk in. Is it possible she had no idea? I doubt it.

It's a weird place that we're in. These technofascists are openly announcing that they intend to build a surveillance and control system that would make George Orwell or Aldous Huxley turn in their graves. They openly state that they're against democracy, because it limits their "freedom" to […]

Life in the 5th Age wasn't easy for an immortal half-elf, but work as a tour operator paid the bills.

People are probably bidding on this "supercomputer" just to rip out the sweet 5TB of DDR5 RAM...

Boost for reach please!

Does anyone know of a turnkey 'de-bigtech' solution, service or facilitator? My attempts have stalled and fallen into the 'too hard' basket. I am willing to pay. Not sure how much.. what's your price? Preferably NZ based but most locations except USA and hell considered […]

Yesterday I found this proposal for improving the transport network of Christchurch city, NZ, drawn on a footpath in chalk. It's brief, but good.

I found this drawn in chalk on the footpath by the Ōpāwaho / Heathcote River. Artist unknown.

I am infuriated. Roger is a cantakerous 83 year old at the best of times. He has angry sores on his legs which a very painful - a 9 or a 10 he says - and a community nurse has been coming to dress and tend them.

Talked to her outside and it's taken weeks to get him to comply with directions and […]

I am one of those happy Gnome users who is generally completely unbothered.... except today I discovered a) there is no simple way to set a preferred terminal app through the GUI b) the dconf-editor app sternly tells you the key it provides is deprecated c) Nautilus does its own […]

We have a lot of books at home. Enough that I think organising them by call number would make sense...

... is this madness? And assuming I don't care, where's the best place to look up numbers? And would Dewey be the best for the simple home librarian?

Just want to gloat briefly that I got a solid rimu bookcase, 2m tall and 1m wide, on Trademe for $300. Drove out to Waikuku and picked it up this morning. Similar ones are at second hand dealers for more than twice the price, and new ones (admittedly shiny and free of dings) around a grand.

Hannah's bf has an Oxbridge accent and sounds not unlike Stephen Fry. The cat is terrified of him, because he is quite tall and clompy. He is understandably upset by this as someone who loves cats.

He just tried to tempt her by holding out a treat, and saying in a low soft voice: "Clawdia, good […]
