Thrilled to be leading my first student team at National Model United Nations in NYC! I've been with this organization since 2012, first as a delegate, then as a staff member, and it is surreal to be here as a faculty advisor just like my mentor is. My students are ready to represent Sudan! 🇺🇳

Today I voted early to maintain democracy. I've never felt the weight of an election this much as I was filling out my ballot in the basement of my public library. The stakes are so high.

Happy United Nations Day! 🇺🇳 I made cupcakes representing the Sustainable Development Goals for my Model UN class, and each student researched the goal and our assigned country's progress on it in class. Being a nerd is pretty sweet 🧁

I made hummus today, and since the holiday season is approaching, it's a good time to remind folks that no matter what Trader Joe's or some non-Arab companies selling in the U.S. say, if it doesn't have chickpeas, it's not hummus. "Red velvet hummus" or whatever is not hummus.

In Mexico City and excited to learn at The Migration Conference this week! It has never been harder to choose between panels. Let me know if you're at the conference and want to meet for coffee/a meal!

I started exploring some film photography when I lived in the UAE last year and finally got my film developed. I think it's so important to nourish the art forms you love even as work gets busy.

The dean speaking at my sister's medical school graduation is implicitly calling out the inequities in healthcare access in the U.S. and I am HERE for it 🙌🏼 So proud of the new Dr.Shady, who is about to begin her residency in pediatric neurology! 🧠👩🏼‍⚕️

Cooked from the Andaluz cookbook my friends/study abroad roommates gifted me tonight. From eastern Andalucía, beef with Mozarabic sauce highlights the Arab influence in southern Spain with dates and raisins in this savory sauce. Now I have delicious leftovers to start the semester!

Grades are submitted, and I have officially completed a wonderful first semester at WashU! Looking forward to more time with family, friends, and Maddie (plus prep for my new spring courses).

Taught my last classes of the semester at WashU today! I had an amazing group of students for my first semester here. They're curious, justice-oriented, and politically engaged, and they kept me wanting to deepen my own learning alongside them. I'm excited to discover what spring has in store!
