If you want the effect to be quilted rather than embroidered, I recommend a standard running stitch. Also, embroidery floss is far more fragile than quilting thread. I assume you don’t want chunky stitching obscuring that intricate detail, and a single strand or two of embroidery thread will break.

If you draw it out, don’t use a Frixion pen–they ghost. I often use a white General chalk pencil, but there are lots of options.

You could also create your own foundation paper template and sew to that. I’ve done that several times.

The elders in my quilt guild share their secrets sometimes. One of them is starch. You can purchase it or make it yourself. It mitigates stretching on the bias cuts. You should still be careful, but they stay quite stiff.
