The River Caldew in Cumbria yesterday. Very unusual to see the bedrock exposed like this - very, very worrying. And it's only halfway though May...😟 #drought #LakeDistrict #Cumbria
The river bed of the River Caldew in Cumbria yesterday. The flow of water has simply stopped, revealing its limestone bedrock -just like the clints and grykes characteristic of a limestone pavement. This is a river which is regularly in spate in the wetter months, when it can be quite destructive But it is very sad to see it in this emaciated state. The trees in the background are still green, but they too will suffer if we don't get some decent rainfall soon.

Spectacular aurora above the North Pennines a year ago today
A sequence of images of the Northern Lights above the air traffic control infrastructure on the summit of Great Dun Fell in the North Pennines of Cumbria. This was one of the most spectacular aurora displays in the UK for decades and the vivid colours were amazing - shades of purple, magenta, green, red and blue - all were present. A bonus moonset was the icing on the cake!

In the foreground the texture of the limestone pavement is highlighted by glancing rays of warm sunlight. In the distance you can see the slopes of Wild Boar Fell, still under a blanket of cloud. A blissfully peaceful part of the superb walking country that is the Westmorland Dales.

Our local herd of fell ponies on Helton Fell on Sunday morning. Could this be the first photographic record of a monkey riding on horseback in the Lake District, or is it evidence that Adobe’s AI powered ‘Generative Remove’ has a sense of humour? The second photo shows what the image looked like before I asked it to remove the distracting pair of ears in the background. I’ve no idea where it got the monkey from - I wonder if anyone else has experienced similar failures of artificial intelligence?

Late evening sun warming what is arguably Long Meg's biggest daughter - one of the main megalith's in Long Meg and her Daughters stone circle, near Glassonby in Cumbria. Meg herself sits in the lush grass outside of the circle and can be seen on the far right watching over her children. Early morning on the River Lowther shortly after sunrise this morning. A light frost garnishes the grass on the river bank, with a lone tree set against a back drop of mist, warmed by the rising sun. A pair of geese honking loudly as they fly overhead, then silence returned.

We had a temperature inversion earlier this week in the Lake District. Foreground trees were still in deep, black shadow, while layers of mist clung tightly to the surface of Ullswater. In the distance, banks of fog blanketed the Eden Valley and the fells of the North Pennines.

A derelict farmstead, high up in the North Pennines National Landscape. The image has been rendered in monochrome to better complement the melancholic nature of the scene. In the foreground lies a shattered, wind-battered fence, whose scattered timbers lead the eye to what was once a family home and place of work. Rural depopulation and collapse of domestic infrastructure encapsulated. That is how I see it.

Sometimes the lie of the land seems to influence the shape of the skies above. Here the arc of cloud on the leading edge of an incoming shower seems to mimic the shape of the pointy ridge below. Pic from a dreich day in the Lake District when utter misery was forecasted.
