A Baja Blast counts as space art, right?? #ArtAdventCalendar

You guys, right after I snapped this pic, I looked outside and a hummingbird flew right up to my window. I think she approves!

Not finished yet btw. Needed another layer on the background first. That will help me judge tones for the final details. #ArtAdventCalendar

Another day of my husband making me a cute little pancake and a gigantic one for himself lol

Lately I’m exploring my artistic side as a separate entity from my scientist side. Most of my paintings combine both, and sometimes there is pressure that my art needs to teach. I’m having a great time creating space art that’s just…fun! First layer on the star candy today (took about ~3 hours).

It took the full power of my last remaining brain cell today to paint the scoring numbers. Gave the background a first layer, too. Once everything dries I can finish the final details & will paint deez pinballs. 🕹️

Mini pinball game update. Today I added the first layer on the scoopy things (idk what they’re called). Tomorrow I’ll add the scoring numbers. Only a few things left + the background. Almost finished! #ArtAdventCalendar

You probably have no idea what I’m painting here. It looks weird. But eventually, it will be an awesome representation of how we combine telescope data to better understand the universe!

Cat’s Paw Nebula 🐾
rectangles = infrared, JWST
black & white = visible light, Hubble (lower resolution)

My expertise and art is astro/planetary related, but I am a huge bird nerd too! I occasionally paint them, like this little Costa’s hummingbird in my yard. My business name was also inspired by a bird—Cyanocitta stelleri, the Steller’s Jay. #ArtAdventCalendar

I spent $40 and waited 1.5 months to acquire this bag of gummy space shuttles because they’re cute & I want to paint a picture of them!

Spectrum of Stardust was my first nebula in oils. I started it in January 2023 right after I made the bold, slightly unhinged decision to leave academia & become a full-time space artist.

No, I did not just glue a balloon to the canvas! Prints of Scientifically Accurate Star are only here until Monday before they pop (haha get it) ☀️

Crystal star & moon are almost finished! Just some highlights & background touch ups after they dry ⭐️🌙

The inspiration behind this is def from a study of Sagittarius B2, a giant molecular cloud composed of gas & dust towards the center of our galaxy. Astronomers searching for amino acids ended up detecting large amounts of ethyl formate. This compound smells like rum & gives raspberries their flavor!
