Happy #macromonday!
Some Physcia and Xanthoria growing on a tree. This November I am challenging myself to take photos of organisms I wouldn't immediately think of. I'm liking it so far.

Today's #macromonday is a #mossmonday as well!
I don't know much about them, but they're very aesthetic.

Project update & cool little milestone captured:

After all the field and lab work, I am finally holding the first photo of "visible results" in my hands.
These are the first gels of a PCR to detect parasitoids. 🪰

I used my time in Vienna to visit the Natural History Museum with a friend. 3 hours only got us through the mineral collection and a few fossils. Very aesthetically pleasing ones:

It’s been a while since the last #macromonday.

Here are some spiders we found during this semester’s first excursion.

Thesis update: I can’t believe it, my field work is officially DONE!
From January until now I’ve collected and processed thousands of flies (and hopefully some parasitoids).🪰

Next step: DNA! 🧬 🧪

Hooray! 🎉 Today marks THE LAST FIELD DAY (!) for the ERC-project of the Hrček lab and Higgie lab, as well as the last Australian field day for my thesis.
Now all that’s left ito do is pack everything up and ship samples to CZ. Exciting times!

Had an amazing time spotlighting at Davies Creek. It was so nice to see my friends up in Kuranda again before I leave! And: we found Litoria nannotis!!

Not QUITE what you want to see on your fly food.
It’s nice and colourful though, so here you are. :)

Heated Trap Project update:

Finished the field work up in Cairns, collected at least some data (better than no data, right?).

Now: field work & lab work in Townsville: trapping Drosophila larvae, letting them pupate, sampling them in the lab.

(Last photo: water dragon we saw today!)

Happy #macromonday and HAPPY EASTER!

I had to work hard to shoot this Zizula. 😄
Tomorrow I’m planning to give you a project update, incase anyone is interested.

The reward after phase 1 of the heated-trap project in Queensland: going to Bali to see the volcanonoes. Another dream come true!

Field Work #update

Phase 1 of my Australian field work is officially completed. I am leaving Kuranda today. The past 2.5 months were filled with hardships, but also wonderful moments. I collected data and saw beautiful species. This is what field work is about! Thank you Kuranda!

One last happy #macromonday from the region of Cairns before I leave.

The species everybody has been waiting for: Ornithoptera euphorion, male and female. Finally! ❤️

For today’s #macromonday I have this chatty individual resting on a tree for you.

Three (?) more macro mondays until I leave Kuranda, time flies.

Thesis topic pt. 2:

I am using a new method to aply an artificial heatwave to the Drosophila-parasitoid system (a food web!) in situ.

The fly larvae are developing inside banana bait where also the parasitoids attack - or not.
The fly pupae can then be sampled. 1/2

For today’s #macromonday I have the banana-coloured male and the female of Litoria jungguy (northern stony creek frog). So cute. :-)

Happy #macromonday from this little Salticidae!
Can anybody ID it?
Photographed in Kuranda, QLD next to a shed.

I have been photographing lots of spiders lately, there will be other organisms again, I promise!

What do I do when I’m not catching flies or parasitoids?

For example:
I went frogspotting in the creek with some lovely JCU-friends today! ❤️

(We saw 8 species, I just have to go through 470 photos…)
