During Hong Kong's anti-extradition bill protests, messages were baked on the exterior of mooncakes. Rude animals, "Be Water" (Bruce Lee), "Hong Kong People," "no withdrawal, no dispersal" and more. Mooncakes were always political.

Hong Kong made cilantro mooncakes. That’s in addition to their iconic "snow skin" mooncakes that are mochi-like.
HK Disneyland sells lava custard mooncakes.
HK KFC even made a "moonlight bucket" with spicy chicken filled mooncakes.

In China, mooncakes vary depending on region in size, shape (round or square), outer crust, and filling (sweet or savory). Some are pressed into molds, others are flaky pastries. Most common in the West are Cantonese-style, lotus seed paste mooncakes with one or two duck egg yolks inside.
