It was a machine, she realized. A thing of rock, metal, and glass. Its head was so meticulously sculpted from rainforest brown marble that it appeared to be covered in soft fur, set with piercing stained glass eyes, its jaw slack, bottom lips pulled back from its white fangs as if it were vocalizing. Gears glinted deep inside its open mouth. The expression wasn’t one of aggression—it wasn’t snarling-- but of such intense scrutiny as to be frightening. Few animals wanted an apex predator looking at them with such rapt attention. The mechanical angel bore four blown glass wings set with pigeon-blue feathers. The upper set of wings were held open, touching the wall on either side of the stairs. The lower wings drooped as if with fatigue, dragging on the floor. One outstretched paw held a shepherd’s crook. Gold tipped its fur, its claws, and its erect ears. Sierra crept closer, nosiness having once again defeated nausea. She watched its face for signs of awareness, but proximity shattered the illusion: its flame-and-glass stare was a hollow, stupid thing that did not follow her. The headache and the thrumming in her chest worsened as she grew nearer, near enough to reach out and tug aside its silky white cloak. Under the cloak was a huge ribcage (human, she thought, because the shoulder blades were all wrong for a bear) made of rich white opal. Shining copper gears revolved where its guts should have been. In lieu of a heart there spun a cylinder bigger than her fist and riddled with pins. The clockwork angel had a music box for a heart. Somehow, this beautiful and terrifying automaton was the infrasound weapon making all the inaudible noise.

Today, the skinniest cloak once again took up the head of the counter, directly to her left, where they would be scooping baked beans onto diners’ trays. On impulse, Livvy lurched over and caught their too-long sleeve in her hand when they reached for the ladle. The outstretched arm froze and the hood turned toward her. “I’m sorry,” she whispered without letting go of the sleeve. “You were going to get dirty—see?” The hood faced forward again, looking, she guessed, at her hand gripping the slinky black fabric. Gathering her courage, she put on a smile and tugged the sleeve toward her. The arm came without resistance; the hood’s hidden gaze followed its movement. “Here, let me help you.” With trembling hands, Livvy steeled herself for the shock of a claw or a paw or a cloven hoof and began to tidily roll up the long black sleeve. At the other end of the counter, the littlest cloak’s dishwater-purple aura emitted a steady Pop Rocks fizz of tiny question marks: small but sharp curiosity, curiosity without hunger. So intent on keeping the cuff neat was she that she didn’t notice how much sleeve she’d rolled up until, after one last fold, she came to a halt at the cloak’s shoulder. ? Looking up, she saw something like an elbow silhouetted inside the cloak’s body. While she had been rolling up their sleeve, her new coworker had been gradually pulling their arm deeper and deeper inside.

A little paperback book called The First Vampire: A Memoir of Blood, Vengeance, and... Immortality. Author name, at the bottom: Andrew Dennis Biersack. The cover seems to be a painting of a vampiric Vlad the Impaler against a bloodred sunset. He has the claws, the flowing black hair, the high-collared shirt and cape. He wears three small skulls on a chain, which I think is securing his cape. There is another tiny skull on a large cross at his belt. He's pretty badass-looking, tbh.
