Today we had Anna Runemark over! She talked about transgressive gene expression in hybrids. We’re looking forward to dabble in yeast experimental evolution together! 🧪

Specific aims are to investigate 1) parallel evolution of climate adaptation in yeast from Europe and South America, 2) the genetic architecture of thermal traits, and 3) the evolution of pathogenicity as a by-product of thermotolerance.

The postdoc will be harnessing the power of experimental evolution and comparative genomics with yeast to address fundamental questions in evolutionary biology.
March 18, 2025 at 11:07 AM
And now, we also have a 2-year postdoc position in the Stelkens Lab! 🧪 If you are interested in parallel evolution, genomics, yeast, and climate adaptation, this could be for you! Please apply through U Stockholm's job platform here: su.varbi.com/en/what:job/...

Sweden is a free and open society, and strives to be one of the world's most innovative and research-intensive nations. We enjoy a respected system of democracy and individual rights, free health care, freedom of speech, a free press, the right to scrutinize those in power, and access to nature.
March 10, 2025 at 11:41 AM
You will use the powerful microbial model system budding yeast (Saccharomyces spp.), experimental evolution, and cutting-edge genomic tools to study evolutionary processes. We are looking for candidates with a strong interest in evolutionary biology!

We thought this is perhaps explained by cell size, i.e. a given OD may result in fewer cell counts if cells are on average larger. But no, we found the opposite! At a given OD, strains with larger cells also produced higher cell counts. Weird!

Heads up #microbiology peeps! Postdoc Javier Pinto looked at two common estimates of population growth and fitness in microbiology - cell density (OD) and cell count (flow cyt) - across different species and strains of yeast. We found some surprises! micropublication.org/journals/bio...
