I’m of the firm belief that, in order to make a romance a good, solid part of the story and something that players will remember, you have to go full send with it.

TLDR of that talk, she proposes a new system of romance in games that gives character romances more depth than just being a toy for the player to put points into and instead giving them an actual personality + wants/needs in a relationship. And I WISH more people would actually think about that!

I watched this panel from GDC once by Michelle Clough (ill link at the end) about making romance in games feel less like a token system where you put in an affection point and get a romance scene. And that really stuck with me! I think about it all the time when I write any of my games now.

Which is fine, sometimes! Sometimes we just need a quick breakaway from a game to date the characters in it. But I don’t think that makes it a GOOD romance route.

Disclaimer, right off the bat: I don’t think all games should have some kind of romance. I think romances and character relationships in general are just hugely downplayed when it comes to RPGS. I see a lot of games treat their romances as a side story that doesn’t really interact with the main one.
