“One of the single, best things I’ve ever done here, being the director, is getting them here. That’s without a doubt,” Josh Watkins, the homeless services director at Open Door, said. “There’s no data point for this, but I guarantee having them here has saved lives.”

Since ICT Street Team established a permanent paramedic at Open Door, a homeless resource center, EMS calls have dropped 50%. Homeless patients are getting quicker care from familiar faces and avoiding hospital bills. Ambulances are freed up, saving taxpayers thousands of dollars.

these paragraphs really stood out to me, as this week Wichita City Council moved to escalate the enforcement of illegal camping. instead of spurring those into shelter, disbanding camps can actually push someone to hide even further... and isolation can be deadly

a heart-wrenching but gorgeously written long read, a former reporter detailing his experience being homeless. he describes the loneliness, discomfort and dangers that come with it. impossible to pick a favorite line, but here’s an excerpt that struck me www.esquire.com/news-politic...

Stories like these, crafted directly with those experiencing homelessness, can help us all better understand the people behind the issue, and, hopefully, better address the challenges that come with alleviating it.

...women fearing co-ed spaces with men, refusal to part from their pet or partner or just pure discomfort with sharing close quarters with strangers.

Over the course of a few months, I asked unsheltered homeless people to write down what they seek in shelter. I've learned during my work that some many reject a shelter bed for a myriad of reasons...

I’ll admit, it was a curious sight to see the former school gutted, waiting for its next wave of people to tuck behind its walls.

Another concern from clients was the restrictive use of bathrooms (only 1 toilet was open for clients during the day). Since this year’s shelter operates from a former school, there are some stalls already. The city added additional toilets & showers outside. (There were portable showers last year)

This season’s shelter will have at least one city staff member on site daily. The staffing ratio to clients is yet to be determined, but Shepler said they were basing it off Red Cross standards for sheltering. That’s a change from last year, read an excerpt from my story below:

Today media was given a walkthrough of Wichita’s emergency winter shelter, where over 200 beds will be available to any one that needs one. It opens Dec. 2, slightly delayed from its initial Thanksgiving opening date
