Alternatively/Additionally, listeners might draw on music that carries important autobiographical memories. Some of that personally relevant music will be sad/lonely, thus reported here. Personally, I think the truth lies somewhere in the combination of the two mechanisms.

Well spotted. My reading would be listening to overly positive music might at times constitute a clash if feeling lonely. Sometimes we draw solace from simply feeling understood in our current state, more so than attempts of getting modulated away from the emotion.

With this generous support, I’ll be working at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music to continue my research on
i) music induced mental imagery for therapeutic application and
ii) biofeedback systems to prevent musculoskeletal disorders in musicians.
