The report highlights that steel production, which is responsible for around 8% of GHG emissions, saw its emissions plateau in 2021. Climate policy isn’t just about ambition, it’s about consistency.
The EU’s plan to phase out free pollution allowances for steelmakers under the Emissions Trading System & replace them with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) was agreed years ago. It’s a gradual shift, but a vital one.

Nippon Steel Corporation‘s plan to reline the BF 14 blast furnace at U. S. Steel’s Gary Works in Indiana, is a climate “failure,” Ed Ballard reported in the latest @wsj.com newsletter.

"That blast furnace No. 14 will emit 100 million tons of carbon dioxide over its extended lifespan.”

ArcelorMittal has spent just 800 million USD on investment in decarbonisation between 2021 and 2024 according to its Annual Reports. This is only 2.5% of the 32.6 billion USD it generated in operating cash during the same period.
