Smith Crane & John Brown – Rumor, Rescue and Liberia or The SWATting of Harpers Ferry
By 1859, rumors of insurrection near Harpers Ferry were common and becoming more frequent since the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Jefferson County native, Smith Crane was an adventurer who allegedly wasted his fortune, remained politically well-connected, supported slavery and said he knew John Brown in Kansas. This talk provides a short biography of Smith Crane and what happened when Smith and Brown’s paths crossed again in the immediate aftermath of Brown’s arrest in Harpers Ferry.
