Renewables are reliable and they are only going to get more reliable and more viable. Having some gas fired plants left for redundancy is probably gonna be necessary though.

If you do something for long enough you get good at it. Stationary steam engines and turbines have really good reliability because it's a mature technology and there's always been fuel available. From first hand experience a turbine or a steam engine is a lot less maintenance than a 16 cylinder CAT.
