Reason 6 of why I love working at a LA college. A student made the for me as a thank you. I (too) often bring frozen coffees to class.

This week, I visited Gustavus Adolphus College and gave a talk. It was a full visit, including lunch with students, meeting the department, and sitting in a class. I feel incredibly honored and have a new reason to ❤️ academia. Seeing each other's campuses and talking about teaching is just...magic!

Reason 5 of why I love working at a LA college. There is a friendly cross-institutional community in my case, as Cornell is part of the ACM. I've met many faculty members, which has led to projects and grants, and friends through the ACMs opportunities.

Reason 4 (bad at days apparently) of why I love working at a LA college: Last weekend I brought students to, and judged for MinneMUDAC. One of my student groups got 2nd place, and I give a lot of credit to their LA education, as judges place high value on understanding what is being presented.

Day 3 of 10 reasons why I love working at an LA college: Every student receives several hours of advising each year, usually more. We build strong relationships with our students, and even after they declare majors and sometimes switch advisors to their discipline, they still drop by to say hello.

Day 2 of 10 reasons why I love working at an LA college: There is no assumption of only working with other statisticians. Interdisciplinary communication is the cultural norm. My stats students have Spanish, theater, english, and other majors/minors. This enhances their ability to do statistics!

Day 1 of 10 reasons why I love working at an LA college: Today, I gave a talk on campus with an English colleague on using scrollytelling for student projects. Our audience included folks in education, math, biology, chemistry, Russian, poly sci, English, lit, and music, and more.

Reasons why I love academia, 1) collaborations of many varieties, 2) teaching and supporting students, and 3) the open door to better myself and fulfill my worldly curiosities :)

I had a wonderful and insightful JSM 2024 in Portland. After 10.5 hours of sleep I am recuperated and ready to apply some of the new knowledge and pedagogy!
