The US does surprisingly well on housing affordability, all things considered. The issue is the lack of density and unaffordable cities, which result in other costs.
Also, not sure how easy it would be to get a small house in places with jobs. No metric is perfect ofc.

A big reason why building tall is important goes beyond density, but livability. Take Athens and Singapore for instance. They have around the same density at 7,400/km2 and 7,800 respectively. But green cover is only 11% in Athens, while being 29% in Singapore. Be like Singapore!
