Reading Danilevskii's Russia and Europe (1869); it's remarkable how close some of the rhetoric is to some of today's when it comes to positioning Russia as a non-violent empire. Here's an excerpt with the central claim made being that Russia never conquered but peacefully assimilated. 1/
