Another example: My PCP, dentist, and eye doctor (all some of the few NHV providers that accept HuskyCare, incidentally), plus Planned Parenthood—all outside the Via NHV service area.

(And don’t get me started about the copy choice not to include accessing fresh, local food at farmers’ markets as a need, but instead lump it with luxury activities 😒 Oh, and did I mention 2/3 NHV farmers’ markets are outside the service zone 🙃)

For example, Via NHV advertises using the service for a work commute. This might work for specific ~9-5pm jobs, but that leaves out, say, teachers, restaurant workers, and most hospital staff.

Speaking of Via NHV’s target demographic—I’m not even sure the program knows what it is. For example, they sent me an email explaining what I could use the service for, but service hours are 7am-7pm and the service area is pretty limited, so a lot of this isn’t possible.

There isn’t a specific age requirement for riding CT Transit alone (personally, I started age ~11). Via NHV requires solo riders to be 13+. Additionally, you need to BYO car seat.

Additional ways Via NHV is worse than CT Transit:

Via NHV drivers are paid below CT living wage, NHV bus drivers above: livingwage.mit.edu/states/09

New Haven Union Station is always pretty, but it’s especially nice during the holiday season. Despite the gold foil ceilings and festive swag, however, it’s best feature is the beautiful, comfortable, and abundant seating (RIP a former runner up, the clicky clacky arrival/departure board) 🎄🕰️❤️

Depressing. The CHEAPR board is stacked with auto lobbyists, while environmental seats sit vacant.

The plan was to buy cider, not apples at Thompson’s Cider Mill…but then we saw the apple selection 🍎✨ (we bought both)

As we move into the holiday season, I want to know: What are your favorite party drink service moves? For Solstice last year, we did hot Cardamaro outside (in a slow cooker to keep it warm), and gin punch inside.

Bus take: Wrapping bus windows negatively impacts riders’ wayfinding and should never be allowed.

When we visited Nordrach to explore the distillery trail, we were met by unmatched hospitality. You can read about the experience in more detail linked above, but this overflowing plate of fresh baked bread and homemade cured meats (served alongside Schnaps and Most) really sums it up.

Nordrach in Germany’s Black Forest is little known outside its region, but boasts a dozen schnaps producers in about as many miles. Come for the spirits, stay for the cake. vinepair.com/articles/hau...
