operating community-driven bluesky (not just PDS) will be much more expensive than an equivalently sized mastodon. you need double infrastructure that other data consumers, including corporate ones, can just tap into without announcing. bluesky is a distributed twitter, not a federated twitter.

the reason i'm not as active on mastodon is that i simply don't have much friends, not because your post cannot reach to everyone (it can), not because the ui is convoluted (it's optional), and not because i can't decide which instance i'm going to settle in (there's no shame in using large servers)

history is littered with mountains and mountains of purportedly superior technology failing to deliver what they have promised.

it's like how people misunderstand natural selection. those who survive are the best, not the other way around.

what i said is that if you've gone out of your way to flip off established practices you need to do the extra work to prove yourself.

that was the experiment, and that's what they failed at.

we can talk about the minutia of protocols all day and it will change absolutely nothing about the current situation.

looks like DID isn't what's transferred over between servers, you just ship the data and point your new DID to the old identity (handle).

i have to dig through the developer documents to answer these questions myself, meanwhile in mastodon at least "works like an email" is correct most of the time.

i'm not even saying you should use mastodon. do you know how much control you have over your bluesky account? do you know that you have a DID that you can just... yoink and put it in your own server? have you even wondered why there's a "hosting provider" selector in the login screen of bluesky?

i know mastodon has problems, which is partly why i'm not so active over there. but protocol-wise, bluesky is order of magnitude more complex than mastodon. thought choosing instance was hard? how about choosing your app view? your PDS provider? your relay? it's all there, you just didn't see it.

if people expect a cargo cult, they get cargo cult. if people know they can change the status quo without some company's stamp of approval, and ACT on it, they can do it.
what should change isn't bluesky. we can start the change and they will follow. make ourselves ungovernable, we have the means.
September 21, 2025 at 1:46 AM
but bluesky does already have decentralised moderation, it's just that bluesky's own moderation service operates in God mode inside bsky.app, so it's meaningless.
You can make your own app view that doesn't do it, but nobody uses it so you still don't get traction... see where i'm going with this?

the social media as we know it is harmful for multitude of reasons, but that means the users should also expect something different. top-down approach to moderation of internet inevitably, indisputably, ABSOLUTELY leads to AI. you simply don't have all the human in the world to do the work.
September 21, 2025 at 1:46 AM
what bluesky has achieved here is by hiding and diffusing the decentralised aspect so well they have essentially nullified the movement. moderation is a societal problem, and no corporate overlord can solve it, period. instead of making it polycentric as promised, they have to do all the dirty work.
September 21, 2025 at 1:46 AM
this is what i mean by "experiment failed." i firmly believe that you build a product first and foremost, ideologies come second. bluesky could have worked, hadn't they threw out the baby with the bathwater and decided to create a bespoke protocol that only they had used.
bsky.app/profile/star...
The whole point of decentralising was to insulate the community within from corporate censorships like this. You've gone out of your way to ditch established protocols, claiming it would be "better." You instead chose to run it like a more convoluted Twitter.

The experiment has failed.

we can keep try and polish a turd. we can make the bad clauses in the ToS go away. but it's just kicking the problem down the line. people were already complaining about inconsistent moderation even without the new ToS. can the perfect ToS save that?
