If you burn down a forest, you don't miss out on lumber for just that season. You have to replant all the trees, nurture them, and wait for them to grow.

The science and research budget cuts happening now are wanton, senseless arson. Recovery, if it ever happens, will take generations.

Fantastic show and great crowd at the Somerville Theater tonight with Ani Difranco. John, the slide guitarist in the ensemble, was awesome!

Most of us have used Global Positioning System (GPS) for navigation & we can thank Gladys West for creating the foundation for GPS.

She used her mathematical & programming expertise to invent an accurate model of the Earth.

She was inducted into the US Air Force Hall of Fame.

This is deeply concerning. If funding decisions are being influenced by political biases against terms like activism, diversity, or cultural heritage, it signals a dangerous erosion of academic freedom. Science should be driven by inquiry, not censorship.

Let’s try something. We here at @altnih4science.bsky.social want to boost descriptions of NIH-funded science.

If you’re a scientist with a post or thread that describes your work, please tag us or DM us, and we’ll repost.
We’ll use the #NIHFundsGreatScience hashtag so people can read in future. 🧪

Genuine question: is there any authorization, anything at all, for a so-called Department of Government Efficiency? an executive order? Anything?

Is anyone working for that “department” a government employee? Or is it just a straight up private sector takeover?
