Homicipher - an otome VN where the protag is "just an ordinary human (cute girl)" (her words not mine) that ends up in a hell world of (romanceable) "horror men" who aid you in survival and learning their language, typing in notes to words as they come up. i would die for Mr. Crawling.
it rules.

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes - a few minor things that prevent this from being a perfect game for me (I'm good off mazes for a decade), but otherwise I have not been as impressed with a puzzle game since Tunic. great story, satisfying puzzles, killer vibe.

Withering Rooms - souls-inspired metroidvania with the best integration of mechanics into story that i've ever seen. fantastic story, amazing mechanics, every idea presented here is beautifully executed. the only issue i have is that there's too much of it, but that's hard to be mad at for too long.

Afterdream - Surprisingly wholesome horror-ish adventure game with some really smart mechanical touches and fun characters. 99.9% of this game is great, i think the last 5 seconds kinda sucks the wind out of the message here, but still very positive on this one overall.

Fear the Spotlight - both really fucked up and really cute. still need to play the second chapter, but the main game is perfectly scoped and incredibly well executed. definitely the best horror game of the year for me.

Primordia - best adventure game i've played in a long time. the narrative is solid, but it's the world they built out and illustrated that trapped me in this game for a full day. think Machinarium through the lens of someone who grew up on Moebius and Giger.

Hollowbody - incredibly impressive that (primarily) a single person made and released this in just a couple years. great atmosphere and visuals, but that's kinda it. feels like the skeleton of a really cool game, but as it is, kind of a drag to play and not really scary at all.

Conscript - really great concept to have a horror game grounded in reality with nothing supernatural, just the human brutality of WWI. but, while i love friction as a tool of game design, 20 hours of frustrating map layouts, constant backtracking, and a barebones narrative make this a miss for me.
