Fabric for clothes was one of the biggest household expenses in the past, and they used and remade the fabric into new garments until it was unusable.

Middle class people still had better cloth than we wear everyday cause they spent proportionally more on cloths than we do. It's hard to even find fabrics as good as middle class people had. It's hard to find comparable fabrics to use in reproductions without spending hundreds on one outfit.

They had cloth way finer than anything available today. Machine weaving may have made cloth cheaper but it will never be able to replicate quality of a skilled weaver.
