Conspiracy fantasists may get the facts wrong, “but often get the feelings right”. I would add a couple of thoughts. I see conspiracy fictions as a form of reassurance. This might sound odd: they purport to reveal “the terrifying truth”. But look at what they’re actually saying. Climate breakdown? It’s a hoax. Covid? All fake. Power? Just a tiny cabal of Jews. In other words, our deepest fears are unfounded. These fictions are highly conservative. Several of Harry Vox’s libels would have been familiar in England 800 years ago. Suspicion of science and technology, to judge by the widespread association of blacksmithing with dark arts, goes back to the iron age. Anti-vaxx myths in Europe are as old as vaccination. Conspiracy fictions tell us nothing has changed, the same bastards are in charge, this is an evil we know. AP News shows the location of Port Authority Bus Terminal (which they call a "depot") *very* incorrectly in this map, like way up near the Bronx – I think that location, numbered as 6 on the map, may actually be of the hostel he stayed at (not #1), which is reported to have been near Columbia U

My just-arrived hardcover copy of "Absolution" by Jeff Vandermeer. The cover features an illustration, on a black background, of a dark green alligator, with its head towards the top right and tail curved around in a U shape at the bottom left, showing you its back and its right side. There are a few dark yellow sunflowers around it, and it has what looks like white-silver paint (rendered in shiny silvery stuff) haphazardly applied to parts of its tail, the backs of its right legs, and behind its head, and above its right eye. Underneath the title in smaller letters, it says "A Southern Reach Novel", and above the author's name it says "Author of ANNIHILATION". The book fills most of the photo frame, which is taken from slightly below a head-on angle, facing down. Honestly, I would kinda like trump if not for the fascism, venality, rape, treason, etc. Maybe I'm just a brain-poisoned American, but this shit is almost endearing. He's actually a good salesman, almost ideal for the mid-to-upper castes in this fucked up society we live in.
