A more-complete counterpart to the previously posted artwork. The Beginning are robotic-looking individuals with black screens making up most of their faces. Their gunmetal bodies have segmented limbs. Their faces resemble the alien species they have created. The two panels on the right-hand side demonstrate this; the upper panel has the Beginning of Verda 5 with a Ghellontein individual. The lower panel has another Beginning alongside the species they created. The Beginning Architects of life as the universe knows it; The Beginning are a race of ancients, each one believed to have guided their chosen planets for upwards of three billion years. The Beginning direct evolution towards predecided ends- creating the intelligent races of the galaxy today. It is believed by some that each focal race- known as the Relic Races or Relics of the Beginning- is a long-term science experiment into the limits of life and evolution. The Anthresque may be an experiment into diversity within a species. The Ghellontein may be an experiment in creating a liquid life form. It is not at all clear how most species exist within this framework. It is simply the assumed reasoning behind the monumental undertaking of the Beginning. Each Beginning takes on physical characteristics of the races they have designed. This is not intentional- indeed they themselves were not even aware of this until it was pointed out to them. The screens that make up their faces change the most readily, with alterations to their bodies being uncommon but known. The Beginning do not have names, per se, and are named with respect to the planets they preside over. The creator of the Ghellontein, for example, is the Beginning of Verda 5. Not all races were created by the Beginning, of course, but more than 90% of intelligent species in the galaxy are Relic Races and the laws and influences of the Beginning easily dominate the Galactic Community.

Great question!
Skii in the back was a product of a dream (genuinely), but most of the species were the product of endless doodling. Doctor Who and Ben 10 are perhaps my biggest inspirations, with little else coming close.

The Ghellontein!
Easily the most common sight in any mixed corner of the galactic community, the Ghellontein were the first race to step out into the stars to meet the other races. They come in a wide variety of shapes and colours.

Brawnworm: a small brown bat-like alien with a single eye. As part of its powers, it is currently piloting a hunk of animated meat. Arm'd Lobbery. A green humanoid alien with a large lower jaw and pink crystals jutting from his head and shoulders. There are pink divides halfway down his forearms, where his hands can separate from his arm as per his primary ability. Sideslash. A strange pink humanoid with a spiral-like head. He has four eyes orbiting his face, and no mouth. Part of his face is missing to reveal his skull and spine beneath, a side effect of his ability to slip through higher dimensional space. Magmalight: a glass humanoid whose body is full of a molten liquid substance. Flows of heat can be seen beneath the surface. He has no eyes, ears, or most other facial features.

The body of the Var'U'San is typically slim, with long limbs & lean muscles. Their ribcage has a gap at the front held together by tendons.

I'm thinking about giving them the ability to expand their ribcage further by stretching the gap. For extra oxygen consumption.
