Eric has spent the last five years as Coalition Director of We Make Minnesota—a group of labor and community groups organizing for an equitable state tax code capable of funding our public investment needs in health care, education, environmental stewardship, and other essential public priorities. That’s an agenda that I can get behind. And it sounds like a DFL agenda. He’s known at the state Capitol. Like me, he’s helped workers to organize unions. I’m sending this message because many of you who have supported my re-election to the Board of Estimate and Taxation have asked me this question: for which of the other two candidates should I vote? For much of this campaign I’ve answered this way: I’m required by party rules to support my fellow endorsee: Bob Fine. But if you ask me with which of my competitors I’d rather serve, my answer is Eric Harris Bernstein. So today I’m making a formal endorsement of Eric even though he’s not a DFL endorsee. I don’t do so lightly. But I’m doing so because I believe that Eric would bring an energy and a background in public policy analysis that’s superior to Bob. I mean no disrespect to Bob, who served for many years on the Park Board and has coached thousands of youth athletes. But serving as a directly elected member of the Board of Estimate is a different role than representing the Park Board on the BET, as Bob did. It requires a balancing of park and other city needs. It requires deep study of city and park finances. Eric contacted me last winter for a cup of coffee and we had a good public policy discussion. We run into each other occasionally in the weight room at the Y or running the lakes. He’s mounted a vigorous campaign. We don’t agree on everything but we agree on enough. He’ll supplement my persistent digging concerning city finances with rigorous analysis.

I know some of your demands are beyond what I can deliver as Outreach Officer. Still, where I can make a change, you have my full commitment—and you can count on me to keep pushing and advocating alongside you. There will most certainly be follow-up conversations to get concrete yes or no answers on some of what has been asked. We must also be honest with ourselves: there is a cultural problem within our party. Every day we fail to confront it, it rots us from the inside out. This is about more than one caucus or one meeting; it’s about the habits and instincts we allow to take root. If we are serious about inclusion, then we have to change the culture: to replace hostility with respect, denial with accountability, and division with healing. Only then can we focus on what truly matters: building community, connecting with voters, and defeating Republicans at the ballot box. My commitment to this work is real, even if it means doing it alone. But I don’t believe any of us should have to do it alone. If you'd like to share your perspective, raise concerns, or simply connect, please don't hesitate to reach out as you are able. I will always make the time to listen and do my best to carry that forward in my role. Together, we can do the hard work of changing our culture, building community, and making this party truly inclusive for all. I wanted to add my own words to what has already been said, because this matters deeply to me I want to be unequivocal when I say: transphobia has no place in our party. Trans and non-binary people are under unprecedented assault, politically, legally, and personally, which makes it all the more important that we walk the walk, not just talk the talk, as a party. I was not a participant at the Feminist Caucus annual meeting, but to any and all trans and non-binary DFLers who walked away from that meeting (and the subsequent follow-up communications) feeling disrespected, unseen, and discriminated against, I want to offer my sincere apology as a leader in this party. I want to acknowledge that rea party. I want to acknowledge that real and lasting harm was caused by some of the conduct of the Feminist Caucus leadership, and that it is incumbent upon all of us, as leaders of the party, to create an environment where that harm can be addressed and where healing is possible. I also offer my commitment—as Outreach Officer and Co-Chair of the Outreach and Inclusion Committee—to work in conjunction with our trans and non-binary activists, Stonewall DFL, staff, other party officers, and party leadership to ensure the DFL is a more welcoming and inclusive space for all. As stated, I’m already working on several steps to increase inclusivity, and next week I plan to have an in-depth conversation with Stonewall DFL to plan next steps with the caucus. I’m always willing to work with any of you all—listening to your input and lived experience to guide my work carefully—and I’ll be the first to acknowledge that I have blind spots. If there’s something I’m missing, please tell me; I will listen, learn, and act where I can. For me, this work looks like ongoing education and training, clear accountability when respect is violated, intentional inclusion of trans and non-binary voices at every level, and practical supports that make sure every DFLer can fully belong.

An email from me to Richard Carlbom: "Richard, I am extremely disappointed in this response. Last week's Feminist Caucus meeting was a clear display of the transphobia running rampant in certain corners of the DFL. We brought it to your attention hoping you would condemn it, hoping you would say that this behavior is not welcome in our party. You have refused to do so. We hoped you would take decisive action to immediately ensure that DFL events, meetings, and other spaces are safe for trans people. We hoped you would use your position to make clear to everyone that as Chair, you will not stand for transphobia in these spaces. You have refused to do so. When we met with you on Monday, your first ideas for what to do about this were to have a listening session for trans folks in the party, to have a DFL T-shirt designed by a trans person, and to involve trans people in Rep. Sarah McBride's upcoming visit. You had no suggested actions that would root out the transphobia in the party - only ones that would amplify the visibility of trans people. While amplifying trans voices is important, It means nothing if it's done in transphobic spaces. You have done nothing to stop DFL spaces from becoming transphobic spaces." It's no wonder so few trans people are active in party leadership, despite the fact that Minnesota has the highest concentration of trans adults. It's no wonder so many of my trans friends have become disillusioned with politics and with the DFL. So many trans people have lost our faith in the DFL, and for good reason. The fact that you have refused to take this opportunity to repair that trust speaks volumes. I still have respect for you and hope for the party, but this is an insufficient way to meet the moment. When trans people are under attack from the Republicans, from the federal government, and from some Democrats, the DFL should consider fighting transphobia to be its duty and its honor. The fact that you instead just regurgitate these non-committal, mealy-mouthed statements that are ostensibly in support of trans people but have no action attached to them? That's incredibly disappointing. I will be taking the next few days to decide my next steps with the party, including whether to step away entirely. Richard Carlbom, Chair of the MN DFL, has finally responded to us about the transphobia at last week's Feminist Caucus meeting. It's fair for me to be kinda pissed off about this kind of response, right?
An email from Richard Carlbom: Dex and Luna, Thank you for reaching out and meeting with us regarding the need to ensure all spaces are trans-, nonbinary-, and LGBTQIA2S+-inclusive. I am an ally in this critical work. Ensuring that everyone can show up as their full selves and safely participate, share their perspective, and advocate for their favorite policy or candidate is essential to our success building the broadest coalition possible. Each member of our community has a responsibility to engage in alignment with our DFL values by treating others with respect and dignity, and to honor how they wish to be addressed. This is the standard expected in all party spaces. When the party falls short, we also have a responsibility to listen and improve. You have my commitment to that work. I am writing to share with you work that is already underway and work that, while planned for, will be accelerated based on your feedback and the experiences you have described. This work includes ensuring that our accessibility committee establishes clear guidelines for how events, meetings, and conventions properly accommodate participants from the trans, non-binary, and LGBTQIA2S+ communities; robust training for staff and volunteer leaders conducted by trusted community organizations; collaborative and regular meetings between Minnesota DFL Party Officers and leaders from the trans, non-binary, and LGBTQIA2S+ communities; and regular engagement with Minnesota DFL staff to advise how we can best conduct constituency outreach with the trans, non-binary, and LGBTQIA2S+ communities. We look forward to expanding on the work we are already doing with Stonewall DFL and with community members with lived experience ensuring that our work remains accountable and effective. I plan to update you on our progress and invite you to meet and discuss our approach to each. The DFL has well-established internal processes to address complaints regarding conduct and challenges to party procedures. These will be used to review and respond to points two and three of the requested actions in the public letter, and I am committed to ensuring these processes operate in good faith.
