Happy bonfire night!

Enjoyed giving a quick talk about the science of fireworks at the Ray Dolby Centre tonight. Since I couldn't do the live demos there, they were pre-recorded in the morning, so here they (see comments) are for everyone's benefit!

I'll miss my official "Welcome to bye-fellowship at Catz" dinner this evening as I'll be in London watching Operation Mincemeat, but I've managed to pop in for lunch and a cuppa at least!

I think they do pay interest when you pay them early. And then it shows up as lots of random-seeming small amounts of money (one of these is 2p!) on the paperwork. I've given up understanding the details, to be honest...!

Sorted now, phew.

First Cambridge Open Days with Physics based in the new RDC building have been a success, though the weather has been rather too hot... Thanks to everyone who stopped by, and good luck to everyone planning to apply!

In #MathsToday, it is time for the UKMT Team Maths Challenge National Final! Good luck to all the teams taking part 🙂

In #MathsToday, time for the UKMT AGM at the London Mathematical Society's De Morgan House. As a chemist, couldn't help noticing it opened on Mole Day!

In #MathsToday, currently running one of the regional UKMT Team Maths Challenges at Framlingham College, before leading the Cayley marking in London with assistance from @ridermeister.bsky.social this weekend.

Also, the Cayley/Hamilton/Maclaurin video solutions are live: ukmt.org.uk/video-soluti...

Went to see "Diving into Math with Emmy Noether" yesterday: an excellent play about her life and maths contributions. Highly recommended if it's ever performed in your neck of the woods. #MathsToday

Chemistry highlight from packing up our offices in recent weeks. Not sure how old this filter paper is. (Any chemistry historians out there who know? It talks about Berzelius in the past tense, but little more to go on.) In any case, what amazing marketing slogans 😆

Here's how to derive it in full (featuring my unit pedantry, but actually worth being careful with both cm^3 and dm^3 floating around).

I'm currently sat in a room with a grandfather clock in, so the ticking may be influencing my thoughts 😅

I think analogue clock faces will continue to be relevant for a while still. Analogue clocks and watches still seem very common (or indeed analogue clock face-like displays in digital settings).

And we're off: first double lecture of the term down! Definitely taught a fair bit of #MathsToday despite this being chemistry, as not all students taking this course have dealt with complex numbers before, and I also had to introduce operators, eigenfunctions and eigenvalues. #iTeachChem #ChemSky

Also a fair bit of #RealTimeChem in brewing beer and making Thetford pulpware (what a fascinating material!).

An excellent few hours at Ancient House Museum in Thetford today, learning all about what the local river made possible in the past, both directly (the water mill) and indirectly (by providing transport routes). A lot of historical #RealTimeChem about making fertiliser from fossils. #chatchemistry

As it says on the poster under "Future directions" 😉 A subset of the questions will be released in book form (with the rest accessible online, linked-through from there), and indeed my Overleaf account will tell you I have started work on this!

The pre-prepared boards are useful collations atm.

Hilariously, I just found your account here by searching for "RSC" with the intention of finding fellow chemists. Your tweet was the top result 😀
