As someone who's never used one, it visually reminds me of The Duke (original Xbox controller). And just as The Duke is for Xbox, the "larger form factor" of Steam controller kinda reminds me of Xbox presenting themselves as the new "large presence" in the console market in the early 2000's.

I understand why you see Mega Venusaur as a Y. However... I do have a couple of counterarguments for why I kinda see it as more of an X.
The main (scarlet) one is the negative space! It looks like an X to me!
The two violet ones might be weird camera things, but they might be X's as well...
