new york democrats shouldn't be let anywhere near power. the ideal democratic leader is a guy who won by 2 percent and actually thinks of the GOP, rather than other Democrats, as the enemy.

My problem with it is that as written, it excludes various foreigners from flying (expired visas, missing I-94s, etc). They may not be enforcing these requirements yet, but they're there.

I can imagine pushback against HRC for various reasons. For others, like the LGBTQ Task Force, I don’t know why there would be any bitterness. Then again, I’m not plugged into the wider social media sphere.

That’s a large enough coalition to make progress. Trans particular organizations are ideal for service to the community, but not sufficient to move a legislature on their own. Better to convince other social justice orgs to go to bat for them.

Social justice movements need both kinds of activists — insiders and radicals — to succeed. Think MLK and Malcolm X. They need to be focused on winning instead of fighting each other.

The AIDS crisis had even higher stakes, and needed both respectability politics (Ryan White, Lady Diana) and ACT-UP fighting to succeed.

Agreed. Social media did not exist, and a lot of the strategizing was done in person. There were still fights about whether to go for marriage vs. other rights.

One difference between the two groups is trans people are more at risk from government action. The stakes are higher, therefore bigger emotional reactions. I know some people who are furry once a month. It’s more of a fun activity than an identity.
