This submarine was originally commissioned as USS Squalus in 1939. While carrying out a diving exercise, the sub partially flooded, killing 26 crewmen, but the remaining 33 men were saved during the ensuing rescue operation. (cont'd)

Having escaped - twice - from captivity in Georgia in the 1920s, Burns' memoir was adapted in the 1932 film, I WAS A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG, the popularity of which led to the abolition of the chain gang system. Burns' sentence was commuted to time served. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_...

Fort-Whiteman emigrated to the Soviet Union in 1927. A decade later, he was arrested during Stalin's Great Purge, accused of Trotskyist sympathies, and died in a Siberian labor camp in 1939.
