If it wasn’t for fielding a national championship team (bc their ranking has historically been inflated by lack of a strong division) and the movie Rudy it wouldn’t be as well known outside of the Chicago suburbs.

I wouldn’t say notre dame is on the same level of good ole boys network as the SEC schools. For one they can occasionally field a good basketball team.

Its reputation is anchored on football, its law school, and regional + catholic cultural cachet. Decent number of business people in Chicago and other Midwest metros are alum too. Notre Dame undergrad told me as a high schooler I wouldn’t get into med school if i went to the state uni i ended up at.
